The Academy offers a one-year (four term) academic program as a minimum. Throughout this program, students encounter rigorous academics which will prepare them for further study in college. Students also receive one-on-one therapeutic support from licensed counselors to help them conquer academic and mental health challenges.

At The Academy, academics and therapy are not viewed as separate disciplines. Instead, they are treated as two sides of the same coin. Each student’s academic advisor and therapeutic counselor will work as a team to meet that student’s needs and coordinate effective care. Many evidence-based therapeutic approaches are used to help students work through challenges and develop healthy emotional and social skills. Academics focus on strong foundations in core subjects through active learning and critical thinking skills. Students create Individualized Learning Plans with the help of their support team at the start of the term. Over time, they will modify these documents to reflect progress and set new goals. Students are also taught Executive Skills like time management and organization.

All support at The Academy is personalized to individual students’ needs. A strong emphasis is placed on finding where students excel and capitalizing on those strengths to drive success throughout the program. Small class sizes and an average of only 22 students on campus year-round enable this one-on-one attention.

What Sets
The Academy at Shortridge Apart?

The Academy’s focus on Positive Youth Development gives students opportunities to develop confidence, character, and competence in and outside of the classroom. Rather than focus on “correcting” perceived deficits in students as some other programs do, The Academy helps students find their strengths. This approach also includes the family in regular therapy sessions to create a far-reaching support network of family, teachers, and peers wherever a student turns.

The Academy is also unique in its dedication to getting students involved and giving them a voice on campus. Student involvement across campus is strongly encouraged, with many students taking roles on committees, in extracurricular clubs, and having a say in policy at the school. These opportunities allow students to practice the emotional and life skills they are learning in practical environments that mimic the situations they will find post-graduation.
